SSAT Journal 23 – Winter 2023
The Winter 2023 edition of the SSAT Journal explores a wide range of topics highlighting best practice and innovation in schools.
There are two think-pieces from Leadership Legacy Fellows. Emily Elmer from Farlingaye High School focuses on a project to support vulnerable families while Amy Webb from Chapelford Village Primary School outlines her work on improving writing skills for primary pupils.
The Journal also introduces our latest pamphlet Beyond Manifestos and includes Professor Barry Carpenter’s contribution: ‘Relationships and rebuilding: schools as congregations of compassion’.
We are delighted to partner with Beyond and in this edition Louisa Rose, CEO, highlights the connection between poor mental health and behaviour and how their mental health resources can be used in schools.
Additional articles cover topics such as instructional coaching, teacher observations and parental engagement. There are also articles with a focus on introducing a culture day and the role of the Afro-Caribbean Society at Bexley Grammar School.
In ‘Making every lesson count: changing habits’, Corinne Settle acknowledges how time with learners is limited and how we need to make the best use of the time we have. She continues by outlining how SSAT’s Embedding Formative Assessment supports a habit change process that can improve learner outcomes. It also includes a case study from Hayling College which explains how investing in the programme is improving wellbeing and reducing workloads for teachers in their school.
The SSAT Journal is a benefit available to all staff members located in SSAT member schools. If you’d like to contribute to a future edition, details can be found here.
