The Summer 2023 edition of the SSAT Journal covers a wide range of topics in education beginning with a Welcome message from Sue Williamson, SSAT’s Chief Executive, emphasising our mission to prepare all students for fulfilled lives. The journal includes an article by Jennifer Cox from The Fernwood School on “Empowering females in design and technology to target the disproportion of males to females in GCSE uptake.” Cox discusses the gender imbalance in design subjects and efforts to inspire more females to pursue careers in this field.

Nicholas Mort from Futures Teaching Alliance contributes an article on “Reshaping and redefining 21st-century childhood,” exploring the implementation of attachment and trauma-informed practices in schools to support students’ emotional well-being. The journal also introduces SSAT’s The Children’s Charter outlining six pledges to enhance children’s well-being and experiences.

Other articles cover various topics, including LGBT+ inclusion in schools, embedding improvements in teaching and learning, supporting EAL students, and strategies to build fluency and confidence in foreign language learning. There are interviews with educators discussing strategies to develop effective learning skills, upskilling students and staff in the cognitive science of learning, and laying the foundations for a physically active lifestyle.

Congratulations are given to the exceptional pupils who have been awarded the Student or Pupil Leadership Accreditation during the past year. Along with recognition of Invicta Grammar School in Kent and St Andrew’s Catholic School in Surrey, who have both been accredited as having ‘transforming’ practice in all 12 strands of the Framework for Exceptional Education.
