SSAT Journal 21 – Spring 2023

By SSAT
Publication Date: 2023

The Spring 2023 edition of the SSAT Journal begins with a welcome message from Sue Williamson, SSAT’s Chief Executive, reflecting on the challenges and evolution of curriculum design and professional development in schools. The journal addresses the critical issue of poverty and its impact on education, featuring an article by Katrina Morley and Sean Harris from Tees Valley Education on “Poverty unmasked: Listening to the voices of children and families in the cost of living crisis.” They emphasise the importance of deep listening and understanding the experiences of families facing financial difficulties.

Nadia Seaborne from GEMS Wellington International School shares her positive experience with ChatGPT, highlighting the benefits of artificial intelligence tools in education. Nikki Sullivan and Kelly Tatlock from Beckfoot School discuss building a sustainable, staff-centred CPD model to foster cohesion and culture. Anthony Henry from Redden Court School stresses the significance of parental engagement in supporting local families.

The journal also delves into essential themes like racism, promoting integration and diversity and enhancing ambitious cultures in sixth-form settings. Academic insights, partnerships with universities and charities, and incorporating social justice in the curriculum are also discussed. Dr Marcella McCarthy from Royal Latin School introduces “The CPD Rainbow” as a tool to enhance teacher autonomy.

There are interviews with educators Jack Gallagher from Richard Challoner School and Anna Dwyer from St John the Baptist School discussing strategies to support a successful transition.

The SSAT Journal is a benefit available to all staff members located in SSAT member schools.
