SSAT Journal 08 – Spring 2017
In the Spring 2017 edition of the SSAT Journal, various contributors delve into topics such as school leadership, collaboration, formative assessment, character education, curriculum integration, and motivating students.
Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT, expresses her frustration with the government’s plans to extend selection in schools despite consultation responses. She emphasises the importance of principled leadership and the need for schools to focus on student development rather than top-down initiatives.
Reverend Mike Haslam of Taunton Academy reflects on leadership and how leaders should seek light even in challenging times. He shares an assembly experience that helped students discuss their views on Donald Trump, highlighting the importance of creating resilient individuals who never give up on seeking and sharing light.
Patrick Ferguson, Principal of Hope Academy, shares his insights into effective leadership that overcomes discord and fosters united efforts towards excellence. He emphasises attributes like humility, listening, emotional intelligence, and resolving conflicts promptly. Ferguson also discusses the challenges of bringing together two failing schools and the importance of a people-focused approach to rebuilding staff morale.
In “What character education means to us,” Nick Lowry from The Co-operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent discusses the promotion of moral and intellectual performance, and civic virtues among their students. They offer a diverse extended curriculum and use initiatives like “The Edge” and the Co-operative Young Leaders programme to empower students and strengthen student voice.
The publication also features contributions from other educators, including Baroness Sue Campbell, Professor Andy Hargreaves, and Jo Corrigan, offering their perspectives on topics such as school improvement, engaging all adult stakeholders, independent learning, and homework relevancy. In addition, there are reports from the SSAT National Conference 2016, discussions on talent management, and insights into the impact of educational leadership programme.
