Deep experience – 1: A new shape for schooling?
“Deep Experience – 1” authored by David Hargreaves, offers perspectives on transforming secondary education. At the heart of Hargreaves’ philosophy is the concept of ‘deep experience’ – a radical approach to learning that hinges on full student engagement, integrating curriculum with new technologies to foster an environment of active, personalised learning. The pamphlet describes how traditional teaching methods often lead to student disengagement, a phenomenon varying in extent, frequency, and underlying causes, such as domestic influences, self-image issues, and curricular boredom.
Hargreaves proposes three key strategies to combat disengagement: creative and imaginative lessons, vocational courses, and the innovative use of technology. He emphasises the significance of projects that are authentic, co-constructed, multidisciplinary, and challenging, which not only engage students but also develop their multiple intelligences and competencies.
The pamphlet explores the value of vocational courses, highlighting the potent master-apprentice dynamic in teaching and learning. This approach fosters a sense of identity and belonging within a community of skilled practitioners, enhancing engagement and learning outcomes.
Hargreaves underscores the transformative potential of new technologies in education. He illustrates how these technologies can redefine the roles of teachers and students, enabling more autonomous and Personalised learning experiences. The integration of digital communication tools into projects aligns education more closely with students’ real-life experiences and interests.
The publication contains pertinent questions to help school leaders apply the concept introduced by Hargreaves in their schools; and gives case studies showing how some schools are on the road to achieving it.
