‘Labouring to Love Headship’ research report launch event
This event outlines, from the perspective of headteachers, why the “best job in the world” is becoming untenable for so many.
We have written a report, drawn from our ‘Rethinking Headship’ survey, which captures the insights of current and former headteachers with almost 2,000 years of headship experience between them. We will share fifteen headlines that ought to make those responsible for supporting the work of headteachers stop and think, and eight recommendations to help guide those seeking to rethink headship at a systemic level.

Headteacher retention is a grave and growing problem for the education sector. The complex challenges that heads increasingly face are overwhelming whilst preparation, induction, training and support for headteachers is underwhelming in helping them understand, process and address these challenges.
This event is aimed at all those who have an interest in improving the professional and personal experience of headteachers. We welcome education policymakers and commentators, school governance professionals, professional association leaders, and those who offer leadership preparation, training and support programmes.
Most of all, though, we would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to headteachers: past, present and future. Our findings and recommendations in ‘Labouring to Love Headship’ are by you, about you and for you.
