Schools need to be thinking about improving behaviour when things are going well, not only when there are problems to fix.
Charlie Taylor, EEF, Improving behaviour in school guidance report
Everyone who works in education knows that children’s behaviour makes the most significant impact on every facet of school life, not least, on their ability to learn.
The National Behaviour Survey in June 2022 highlighted that 84% of teachers felt there had been an increase in the numbers of students whom they found increasingly difficult to teach, and they didn’t feel the necessary support to teach these children effectively was there.
- 91% of children thought their school’s behaviour rules were only implemented ‘fairly’ some of the time
- Only 24% said their school asked for feedback about behaviour systems and support.

Behaviour support programme
This behaviour support programme will allow you to pinpoint where your current practice around behaviour management may be weak and find a way forward to better meet the needs of today’s young people. This package gives a unique and bespoke review of policy and practice in a non-judgemental but supportive manner.
How does it work?
Stage 1: School self-audit
SSAT’s Behaviour audit tool is drawn from extensive research from this country and further afield. It is designed to prompt thinking about perceptions of behaviour within your school and the extent to which your procedures are evidence informed. It sets a high bar, but it is designed to challenge your thinking about the way you establish your behaviour culture, and how relationships are formed, and maintained with children.
The audit is split into six sections:
- Our children are our priority – knowing and understanding your children and their influences.
- It is the norm to do the right thing – getting the culture right.
- Knowledge is power – use of data.
- Keep it simple – getting the basics right.
- The devil is in the detail – rewards sanctions and red lines.
- Make the implicit explicit – teaching learning behaviours alongside managing behaviour.
The Behaviour Audit Tool is laid out in easy-to-read statements that can be scored to help you decide what areas of your practice need further attention. It is designed to be used cross phase.
Stage 2: In-person visit
An in-person visit led by one of our education team which includes:
- A detailed, rigorous review of practice.
- An objective look at your school’s behaviour systems and how these could be developed to better meet your school’s needs.
- A proactive method to identify, prioritise, and implement actions that will make the most difference to learners.
- Pinpoint research that may assist in development of your practice.
- Establish successful approaches to improving behaviour through collaboration and engagement with stakeholders.
Stage 3: Follow up report
A written report detailing the findings of the visit will be returned to the school within ten working days. The report will highlight areas of good practice and suggest areas for further development.
