The year that was 2007…
Gordon Brown becomes PM
On 27th June Tony Blair resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and is replaced by Gordon Brown. Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Brown would stay in post for almost three years before a hung parliament in the 2010 general election would lead to his own resignation as Labour Party leader.
iPhone launched
Apple boss Steve Jobs introduces the Apple iPhone at the annual Macworld Expo on 9th January in San Francisco. Apple sold over 74 million units of it’s latest iPhone (6) in the first quarter of 2016.
Sarkozy triumphs in France
Nicolas Sarkozy is announced as successor to Jacques Chirac as president of France on 10th May. Sarkozy would hold the position for 5 years before being defeated in the 2012 election by Socialist François Hollande.
Australia 5-0 England
Avenging 2005’s Ashes defeat, Australia complete a 5-0 series whitewash over England on 5th January. The first whitewash since 1920-21, the series marks the end for four significant Australian players – Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, and Shane Warne.
You can stand under my umbrella
Taken from her third studio album, Rihanna’s Umbrella is released on 29th March. The track would hold the number one spot in the UK for 10 consecutive weeks – the longest run for any single released between 2000-2010.
28 weeks later
Post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film 28 Weeks Later is released on 11th May. As its prequel 28 Days Later had done before it, the British-Spanish film performed well in the USA – grossing $28.6 million in total.
Chelsea cup double
Didier Drogba’s 116th minute goal wins Chelsea the FA Cup on 19th May. It completes a domestic cup double for Jose Mourinho’s side after winning the League Cup in February, beating London rivals Arsenal 2-1 in Cardiff.
