The year that was 2002…
End of foot-and-mouth outbreak
After a first case of foot-and-mouth disease was recorded at Cheale Meats abattoir in Little Warley, Essex on 19th February 2001, a final cull of lifestock in the UK is performed on 1st January 2002 at Donkley Woods Farm, Northumberland.
Brazil knock England out of Korea/Japan 2002
On 21st June, goals from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho knock England out of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Michael Owen gives England the lead but a blunder from veteran goalkeeper David Seaman gifts Ronaldinho Brazil’s second goal as they defeat Sven Goran-Eriksson’s men at the quarter-final stage. Brazil would go on to beat Germany 2-0 in the final to lift their fifth World Cup.
Earthquake shakes United Kingdom
Registering 5.0 on the Richter scale, an earthquake strikes the West Midlands at close to midnight on 22nd September. It is the largest earthquake to hit the UK since 1990.
Coldplay release second studio album
Released on 26th August, A Rush of Blood to the Head becomes the eighth best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK. It would spawn the singles In My Place, The Scientist and Clocks.
London’s City Hall opened
Designed by Norman Foster and situated on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge, City Hall is opened in July.
Two Towers released
Peter Jackson’s big-screen adaption of the second volume of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers – hits cinemas on 18th December. A huge success, the film earns over $926 million worldwide and is (as of 2016) the 33rd highest-grossing film of all time.
2002 Commonwealth Games
The XVII Commonwealth Games are held in Manchester, England from 25th July to 4th August. England win 165 medals in total, the second-most behind Australia on 207.
