The year that was 2000…
Millennium Bridge opened… and closed
After two years of construction, the London Millennium Footbridge opens to the public on 10th June. It was closed two days later due to unexpected lateral instability, and wouldn’t open again until 2002.
Nokia 3310 released
Replacing the Finnish company’s popular 3210, the Nokia 3310 mobile phone sells well over 100 million units worldwide. In November 2015, the phone is chosen as one of the first three ‘National Emhojis’ for Finland.
Sydney 2000
The Games of the XXVII Olympiad are held from 15th September to 1st October in Sydney, Australia. The Games receive universal acclaim and are widely regarded as one of the most successful sporting events in history. The United States finished top of the medal table with 37 gold, 24 silver and 32 bronze medals.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…
Gladiator – Ridley Scott’s epic historical drama – hits the big screen on 5th May. Starring Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, the film wins five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.
France crowned European champions
On the evening of 2nd July, Juventus striker David Trezeguet slams home the golden goal that defeats Italy and wins France the UEFA Euro 2000 title. The triumph follows their World Cup success on home soil two years earlier.
The Marshall Mathers LP
American rapper Eminem releases his third studio album The Marshall Mathers LP on 23rd May. The record becomes the fastest-selling studio album by any solo artist in American music history and would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album the following year.
1st Mayor of London
Ken Livingstone is elected Mayor of London on 4th May – a position he would hold for four years. A nonpartisan politician, Livingstone won with a majority of 39.0%, followed by Conservative candidate Steven Norris (27.1%) and Labour’s Frank Dobson (13.1%).
