4. The Baverstock Academy: Where teaching and learning applies to everyone, all the time

By Peter Chambers
Publication Date: 2013

The Baverstock Academy in South Birmingham shows a remarkably broad and deep approach to the development of its teachers. Every teacher in the school, including the seven NQTs, has a role not just in developing their own expertise and value as a teacher but in their colleagues.

Collaboration is the key philosophy behind Baverstock’s approach to teacher development. Teachers across phases, departments, and subjects collaborate extensively, developing a common language and purpose for teaching and learning. This collaborative atmosphere extends to new teachers, who receive guidance and support from experienced colleagues as they begin their careers.

Baverstock emphasises student-led learning and encourages students to take responsibility for their education. In turn, teachers recognise themselves as learners, constantly sharing ideas and practices to improve teaching methods. The school believes in sharing innovative approaches to maintain engagement and interest in the classroom.

Innovative practices such as animal exhibits, interactive classroom spaces, and the 6Rs (readiness, resourcefulness, resilience, responsibility, reflectiveness, and reasoning) are integrated into the teaching methods. The staff’s dedication to improvement and constant sharing of ideas has led to a significant positive shift in teaching and learning at Baverstock.

The school’s results and Ofsted evaluations reflect the success of its approach. Baverstock’s students have achieved outstanding results, and the proportion of good to outstanding teaching continues to rise. The school’s focus on developing learners into well-rounded individuals has transformed the learning environment, fostering a positive learning culture where students strive for success.
