Catcote Academy took part in Art Bytes. Arts bytes is a national EdTech programme that utilises a bespoke, immersive, virtual gallery to offer young participants the opportunity to see their art exhibited online. They engage with new technology from the safety and convenience of their own home or school. Arts bytes builds learner confidence and nurtures talent. Catcote Academy encourage future cultural engagement in and on the online gallery.
Our creative arts students worked towards individual artwork which will a shortlisted online for a public vote. The winning artist from each school will see their work displayed in our virtual gallery. Art Bytes culminates every June with a celebration event at a high-profile cultural venue in each of the nine regions of England. Finalist had work exhibited at the Biscuit factory in Newcastle.
Channel 4 schools
KS3 students took part in Channel 4 schools big creative careers on the small screen “Have a Go” TV Skills Challenge. They learned how a TV programme goes from an idea to being broadcast on Channel 4. 60 students took part in two small screen workshops alongside a live question and answer session with Channel 4 studios. The students enjoyed working as of a production team – this included roles such as production accountants and the production managers. A creative team – this includes roles such as script supervisors and the actors and a technical team – this includes roles like the grip, the camera operators or the sound engineers. The students loved every minute of the day.
Trashion Show 2023 – Linked with Hartlepool Tall Ships, ‘Inspired by the sea’
The Catcote ‘Trashion’ show is an inclusive event which aims to raise awareness on environmental issues and to offer a greater understanding culture of our throwaway society through art and design. Students and staff at the Academy worked hard together over eight weeks to create fashion outfits and accessories fit for the runway, using upcycled and recycled materials inspired by this year’s Tall Ships event coming to Hartlepool next week. Students have learned about the fashion industry, landfill and the large impact on biodiversity linking to recycling! As a result, the students have become passionate about promoting the negative impacts; apparel supply chains are directly linked to soil degradation, conversion of natural ecosystems, and waterway pollution.
The Trashion Show was performed live at the Central Hub and shared with the wider public. This has encouraged the students to share their creativity, build resilience and develop confidence.
The academy staff have been committed to ensuring that their students reach their full potential from models’ reporters, designers, creative directors to student representatives for judges. An immense amount of work went into the event, designing, costumes, hair and lessons around our planet. This fifth show went down a storm, the students and staff are so creative, they enjoyed showing their creations off with pride on the catwalk with loud music.
Students from across the trust have had the amazing opportunity to be involved in the creative and volunteer programme ahead of the Tall Ships event in July. They were given two challenges throughout the morning to develop their team building skills ready to participate in this exciting and inclusive public event. Our students gained experience working collaboratively, with the Tall Ships creative events committee, to look at the map history of Hartlepool and create boats from recycled materials, promoting sustainability ahead of Catcote Academy’s annual Trashion show in July. Thanks must go to the Tall Ships creative event committee giving their time and expertise to support our students, developing such important skills, giving accessibility to new experiences within arts and culture around Hartlepool.
Shaun on the Tyne
Catcote Academy students applied their chosen design to our fibre glass Shaun sculpture. The ‘Shaun the Sheep’ sculpture was painted by students from across the academy, all 203 students will have touched paint to be a part of this amazing project. Every student had a fingerprint within the final element to the design. They were proud to be part of the project, supporting the Shaun on the Tyne event journey. Our students had the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity around the North East with involvement of professional artists and over of over one hundred ‘Shaun The Sheep’ sculptures that will form a trail throughout Newcastle in July and August 2023.
