Fighting for Deep Social Justice

Sue Williamson, SSAT

This is the first in the series of pamphlets, and establishes the context and marks the beginning of SSAT’s campaign to fight for social justice in education; a conversation with schools and those who have a stake in advancing the social justice agenda.

In the pamphlet, SSAT’s Chief Executive Sue Williamson explains why SSAT is launching this fight and why it’s a critical agenda for schools; in his foreword, Rt Hon David Lammy MP writes about the current landscape and his reasons for agreeing to be the Fighting for Deep Social Justice campaign’s Patron; the Personalising Learning work of Professor David Hargreaves is revisited and updated to become the underpinning framework for this work; and forthcoming opportunities to get involved in the campaign are outlined. Throughout the pamphlet, there are also a number of reflective questions which have been designed to guide thinking and spark ideas to help identify new approaches to achieving deep social justice.

Deep Learning for Social Justice

Andy Williams and Corinne Settle, SSAT

Digital PDF: Free

In this pamphlet, explore how a refocus on deep learning can help achieve a more socially-just and equitable education system as we move into the 2020s. It covers how schools can ensure the preconditions of learning are in place: literacy, numeracy and oracy. It also considers the role of metacognition in helping students become resilient learners; self-determination so that students become agents of their own lives; and formative assessment, the most powerful strategy we can use to help students learn deeply.

Deep Learning for Social Justice – Case studies

Complementing the ideas in the Deep Learning for Social Justice pamphlet, this selection of school case studies illustrates how schools are already working to achieve deep social justice in their individual setting. In these short essays, discover the whole-school impact of the Embedding Formative Assessment programme at Kingsford Community College; understand how developing a community of Lead Practitioners deepened teacher learning at Bristnall Hall Academy; and how attending the SSAT National Conference in 2017 helped Tavistock College tackle local community challenges faced by their students.
