Presenters’ preview

In an era of high stakes accountability, it’s no wonder that it can seem like everything needs to be measured or weighed to have any worth. But how does this translate to evaluating the quality of teaching within a school? Can criteria based judgements ever meaningfully measure someone’s teaching ability? More importantly, why would we want them to?

Our session will share an evaluation cycle which has been designed and trialled over the last year. It can be used as a cohesive tool by any team within a school to both evaluate and develop teaching to impact where it matters the most – in the classroom.

The fundamental shift in approach moves the emphasis to the quality of teaching, not teachers. Our work aims to marry together the systems traditionally associated with data, and those associated with learning and teaching, to create a streamlined and impactful evaluation tool which is fit for purpose for all teachers.

During the session, we will look at the principles of the cycle, along with how we have implemented it and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. We hope to encourage delegates to challenge traditional notions they may have about grading teachers (whether this is based on triangulated data or not) and get participants to reflect on how best to develop excellent teaching – whether they are a teacher, middle leader or senior leader.

We will also share practical examples of strategies used within our evaluation cycle which can be adapted and personalised to attendees’ own settings.
