The year that was 1995…
Windows 95 launched
Microsoft’s Windows 95 operating system is launched on 24th August. The system marked a significant improvement over it’s predecessor – Windows 3.1. Despite this it would be replaced 3 years later by Windows 98.
King Eric’s Kung fu kick
On 25th January, Manchester United striker Eric Cantona launches a kung fu-style kick into the Crystal Palace crowd after receiving verbal abuse following his sending off for violent conduct. The Frenchman was subsequently banned by United for the rest of the season, and sentenced to 120 hours of community service.
Brixton riots
Following the death while in police custody of black 26 year-old Wayne Douglas on 13th December, several hundred people battled police for 5 hours as trouble broke out after an initially peaceful protest outside Brixton Police Station.
Braveheart released
Directed, produced and written by Mel Gibson, historical war epic Braveheart hit the big screen on 24th May. The film would go on to win 5 Academy Awards at the 68th Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup, and Best Sound Editing.
Robson & Jerome – Robson & Jerome
Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, otherwise known as Robson & Jerome, release their first album Robson & Jerome on 19th November. It becomes the Christmas number one album and in the process the biggest-selling album of the year.
To infinity, and beyond!
Pixar’s Toy Story – the very first feature-length computer-animated film – is released on 22nd November. With voiceovers from Tim Allen, Tom Hanks and John Ratzenberger, the film receives rave reviews and would spawn three successful sequels.
eBay founded
eBay, as we know it today, was founded as AuctionWeb in California on 3rd September by Iranian-American computer programmer Pierre Omidyar. In 2015, the company would post a net income of $1.72 billion.
