The year that was 1989…
The fall of the Berlin Wall
Beginning on the evening of the 9th November, and continuing for many weeks, the fall of the Berlin Wall reunited Germany after twenty-eight years of division.
The World Wide Web
English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web. He implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet in mid-November.
The Commons goes live
The first televised speech in the House of Commons is made by Conservative Member of Parliament for Eastbourne, Ian Gow, on 21st November.
Game Boy released
The Nintendo Game Boy, an 8-bit handheld video game device, is released in Japan on April 21st.
Dead Poets Society hits the big screen
Released on 2nd June, Dead Poets Society, an American drama starring Robin Williams, becomes 1989’s fifth-highest grossing film. It would go on to win two BAFTA Awards including Best Film.
Nirvana debut album
American rock band Nirvana release their debut album Bleach on 15th June. The record performed poorly despite positive reviews and would be re-released in 1992.
At home with The Simpsons
Animated sitcom The Simpsons made its prime-time debut on American channel Fox on 17th December. Written by Matt Groening, the show is now in it’s twenty-seventh season.
SSAT class of 1989
